I wouldn't hardly call what Virginia High did to them as holding their own. Actually they got their hind ends handed to them by the Bearcats.....but the same thing happened last year as well.
Reports from last year said that PH would be solid last year and this, then drop off in talent, so they should develop into a decent team. Not an easy opener for the Indians.
Thank you, this board has more football knowledge than all the other boards combined. Not a lot of "tooting your own horn", mostly realistic looks at each team. As far as the new district next year, I firmly believe it'll be a powerhouse district in all sports, there'll be a couple of deserving teams not make the playoffs every year. I can only hope that Lebanon does'nt become the district whipping post. I'll get the word out about this board.....very good forum.
No doubt it will be a murders row come Baseball season and other that Battle there are not give me games during Football.
I heard that Clintwood is picking up Lebanon next year any word on who else Lebanon is going to pick up?

I maxed out at 325 as a junior while at Coeburn and got up to 360 my senior year. 400 is alot of weight but I won't say it is out of reach for a high school kid. This day and time with nutrition advances and the ready access to lifting and structured lifting schedules that are designed to get optimum results in shorter periods of time it is very believable. It's not like it was when alot of us were in school and the coaches said there's the weight room go get stronger.

I've heard several rumors about Lebanon trying to add Clintwood and a couple more from the LPD but nothing definate. The only thing for sure that I've heard is there won't be any Hogoheegee teams on the schedule, let'em miss those gate reciepts that Lebanon always brought in.
You're right about baseball, man that'll be some kind of baseball district. Problem is that there'll probably be 2 or 3 deserving teams not make regionals. I see a lot of trophies coming to that district. By the way, has anybody heard what they're gonna call it? I get kinda tired of calling it "that district".
The only thing I have heard is Clinch Valley, but its hard to tell.

The Clinch Valley seems to be what is being bounced around the most it could also be called the Highlands since every school in it was a member of the Highlands at one time and the AA Highlands will be no more starting next year. I kind of like the CVD myself and I really like the 4 district region for tournament sports I am really looking forward to it

In the Pound-Ervinton pick, 60% chooses the Rebels over the Wildcats with a 12-8 vote.
55% has Twin Springs defeating Coeburn in a close vote, 11-9.
Then the matchup that seems to be equally divided by those on the forum, J.J. Kelly & Patrick Henry both receiving 10 votes. Sounds like this game could be one worth watching!

I hate to say it, but I almost went with PVFan on that one. Especially if the Green team decides to turn the ball over on offense a dozen times.
I agree saw a bit of the Grundy film from last week and Grundy IS a better team than they were last year and some of the things that they do well have given us problems so far this year. Add to that the fact that they have several really Tall wide outs that will give our shorter DBs problems, And a solid D that likes to bring the house (usually a problem for a young O-Line)
I am glad this one is at home since maybe the ride over will get 2 or 3 of the Grundy kids sea sick LOL
Word that I have got from people I know up that way is that they may be worse off this year than last. The loss of key skill players plus some kids who were out for the team last year didn't come out this year, plus quite a few decided to quit after coming out.
They may be able to mount a challenge against the Greenwave, but from several people in Grundy I have spoken with they believe it's doubtful.
I heard they are only dressing like 30 players. That seems a little low for Grundy.
That sounds a lot like what I heard as well. From my understanding, if those who had played last year had came out again & if those that did come out and quit had stayed, they would have had 40-45 on the roster.
I know Grundy is young and inexperienced this year, but you never know - that's why they play the game.

Oh that is exactly what I was hearing as well before the start of the season and it is not like there scrimages have been vs quality teams but they did not look bad in the film I say and the Folks here in Grundy are now saying that they should be OK this year
Yeah, have heard who they have scrimmaged. You are right, not exactly good competition or even an opposing team that you can get a good read off of.
Losing the younger Marcum and the other veterans to graduation off of a team that didn't fare well at all last year just adds to problems they need to rectify.
Based on their schedule, I'd say they'll go 1-9 or 2-8 (probably defeat Shelby Valley, KY and possibly Abingdon - who sounds like they are up the creek once again this year)this season. Nothing meant negative towards those folks up that way, never met anyone from that area that I didn't like. It's just that they currently have a huge rebuilding task in front of them.
Ervington will not come within 2 touchdowns of beating Pound. Ervington is poorly coached and truthfully doesnt have enough talent to beat the like-wise untalented Wildcats.
You are dead on about the Ervinton coaching staff Hustle...they have some real problems in that area. Its too bad though because they have some talented kids this year. Surprised someone like Kiser didn't transfer to Haysi or Clintwood.
Is that the running back?? I think he was #3. He was the only one i was really impressed with. That could start for most LPD teams if it's the one im thinking of.

I was disheartened a bit in the EHS-JIB segment (standing behind the Reb team talking to one of my co-workers) when Kiser asked the coach what to run on that particular defensive play and the coach said "I don't know-run something". Kiser didn't transfer to Haysi (like so many have), because he is what he is for better or worse, an EHS Reb. I have alot of respect for that.
Not sure which part I disagree with more. The part about EHS not coming within 2 TDs of Pound (feel it will be a nail-biter), or the part about Pound not having any talent. The Cats were hit hard by graduation, and the line needs work from what we hear, but the skill people on that team have as much talent as the rest of us in the LPD.
I honestly dont think the game will be close. But as far as the talent goes i meant the team in a whole. The have some decent skill players, but i really dont think anyone on the team other than Hubbard and maybe Strouth would start for many LPD teams. I think mostly a lack of attitude has a large part to do with this, if that makes any sence.
and i should have been more clear on Ervingtons coaching. I think it is poor staff other than Richie Deel. He showed some authority, other than that it looked like a circus.
I think as far as talent goes save for Norton and PV, there's a little on each team, but I also believe that talent (while nice) is somewhat overrated. Hard work, discipline, and fundamentals go a long way (seen Appy win the whole shabang without alot of talent more than once). I guess we'll have to wait until Friday night to see how everybody does. I'm just glad that it's all about to kick off.

I have respect for that too. But if he would have transferred to Clintwood or Haysi like many before him have I for one would not have blamed him. Reason 1: would save his body alot of punishment. Reason 2: rebs just don't have enough kids to compete on a year in year out basis with most teams in the area. Reason 3: inadequate coaching staff at Ervinton. A head coach doesn't need to be a former H.S. superstar but it is sometimes good if he atleast played. The head coach is not the only member of the Rebel coaching staff that didn't put on the pads in H.S. All schools have their questionable coaching staff members...Haysi and Clintwood included but it seems to be more of an issue at Ervinton.
As far as the kids who have transferred to Haysi that lived in the Clinchco area the reason you can't blame them is because of the proximity...Clinchco is twice as far from Nora than it is Haysi but for some reason(probably to keep Ervinton open) most of Clinchco is included in the Ervinton school district. Same can be said for the kids on Rose Ridge in reference to Clintwood. They are in the Ervinton school district but live much closer to CHS. I guess what I'm saying is it would be better for Ervinton to be closed all together...the kids in Clinchco would then be going to Haysi where they should be going anyway and the kids on Rose Ridge would be going to Clintwood like they should be also. The kids on Sandy Ridge could go to Coeburn if they want and the kids at Trammel or Hazel Mtn could go to St. Paul if they want.
Reason 4: Were he at Haysi or Clintwood, his chances of a college look would improve greatly.Those reasons are all common sense/ common knowledge, but sometimes the heart doesn't listen to those reasons. He is gonna be a fine college football player, and he gets zero attention. The Highland Cavaliers may be getting a good one.

Very true, he is no where close to D-1. Good h.s. player and may be a good small college player...we'll see.
Actually from what I heard Tester wasn't recruited heavily by local colleges. He had it in is head that he was going to Miami and went down there and tried to walk on. Well it didn't work out very well so he made his way back to Wise.

I don't know where you get your information but to put it plainly, You are a complete idiot! Coach Crabtree played football for Kelly. If you don't bleieve it ask Jim Dotson, one of the coaches that is helping him. Jim was Crabtrees football coach at Kelly. If you have a problem with Crabtree or his coaching staff, have the guts to go talk to him in person. People like you say whatever you want without any regard for the truth. Shut up or back it up!
Ok good point. I was thinking he played but totally skimmed over that. Maybe the more accurate comment would have been if he had coached. Going from non-coaching (and I believe I'm right, at least on a high school level) and jumping into a head coaching position is a big leap. That being said, I think Crabtree has done a tremendous job at Ervinton. He surely makes some mistakes, but what fairly new coach doesn't? Let's look at some facts. Ervinton has won a few games. They are definitely more confident and on the upswing and don't seem to give up even if they take an ugly loss. They have more kids out than they had. They seem to be bigger/stronger. Now to me, those are all good things. Let's not discount that we all are discussing the Kiser kid. There was an article on him in the football supplement and if someone like Silvers can be found at Ervinton playing basketball, then someone like Kiser can be found playing football. We can sit here and act like they're a hard place to be found, but most of the schools in the area aren't that much easier to find or better when you consider where most recruited players come from. We'll have us a couple around the area, and then you'll go to say the Tidewater area and have as many from one school as the entire area here. Some of our better players have also hindered us greatly going away to school and back within a year because they go somewhere after being superstars here and end up sitting. Most can't wait. We're talking Southwest Virginia gods who played from the day they were able too but when they go off, aren't really that great, especially the first year. You don't think it was difficult for say a Justin Hamilton who had played from the time he was able to walk to go to Va Tech and be redshirted and barely get on the field the first few year. How many people said he would quit. How many said he should and go somewhere that he could play regularly, but he stuck it out, when I'm sure he just wanted to play ball. You know he had to think I should just go back to CVC and play or something along those lines. Ours cant deal with waiting because they have been starting since their Freshmen year, while some of the really good players in the bigger areas had to wait their times to see the field, so when they go to college and have to do it, they're easier to roll with it.
I give Ervintons coaches credit for taking a bad sitution and truthfully have made it decent. We're talking about Ervinton being competitive, having a shot at the Cumberlands, and discussing one of their players and his ability or potential ability to play ball at the next level. Say what you will about the coach, but I actually think he deserves some credit.
I have known Coach Crabtree for a long time. I know what kind of person he is. Say what you will but he cares for the kids that he is coaching. Ask the boys that play for him. Ask Adam Kiser what he thinks of Crabtree. I admire Adam for the ability that he has and for the guts that he has and for the way he has handled himself in all situations. He is a great kid and great athlete and he will go far. He has chosen to stay at Ervinton. Whether you are an Ervinton football fan or not, we all should wish the best for him and all of the kids on the football team.
